Preparing for Algebra
(Entering 8 - 9)
This course is a course designed for students who have previously taken Grade 7 Advanced Math or Grade 8 Pre-Algebra and would like to prepare for or qualify for Grade 8 Algebra 1 or for students preparing to take Algebra 1 in grade 9. It is best suited for students who could use some reinforcement prior to enrolling in Algebra 1.
The class covers the important concepts in a PreAlgebra course which are necessary for Algebra 1. The topics include equations, transformations, angles and triangles, working with linear equations, real numbers and the Pythagorean Theorem, volume and similar solids, and exponents and scientific notation. This is a rigorous course that will prepare students with a solid pre-algebra foundation needed for future success in Algebra.
* Students ENTERING 8th grade have the potential to use this course to qualify for Grade 8 Algebra 1 if students did not meet the prerequisites during the school year, provided they have attended 23 out of 24 summer school classes and score a B - or higher on the placement exam given at the end of August. This course cannot be used as a replacement for taking Pre-Algebra during the school year since the summer courses do not cover the full school year's curriculum.
**Students may also audit this course as a preview/review.
