Teen Teachers- Abstract Expressionism- In Person

For students entering grades 6-9

This course is an opportunity for students to explore the art form of Abstract Expressionism, where artists use abstract/nonrepresentational figures to express emotions. During the length of this course, we will be covering the basics of color theory and learning about a couple of leading figures within Abstract Expressionism, such as Jackson Pollock, Kazimir Malevich, and Wassily Kandinsky. Throughout this process, we will learn about how these prominent artists used their own mediums to convey meaningful messages. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to create their own abstract pieces to convey an emotion. This course is designed for students who have an interest in art or visual design, but want to learn more about expressing themselves through their artwork.

Just a little bit about me (the teacher):

Hello! My name is Esther and I’m a rising senior at Darien High. I’m very excited to be teaching this course. When I was younger, I believed that art was limited to only realism. In reality, art is really just a journey to expressing life experiences and thoughts that words cannot always capture. My favorite part of creating a piece is choosing the color combination, I enjoy experimenting with color to add depth to the piece. I look forward to creating art this summer with all of you!

This course is part of our Teen Teachers program in which Darien's high school and college students teach courses about topics they are passionate about. In addition to the Teen Teacher who will lead the activities, a Darien Public Schools staff member will supervise the class.
