Word Detectives 

Entering grades 1 & 2

Students will have the opportunity to practice spelling and notice patterns in words in this class. Through word study centers and activities, students will be able to pay close attention to words both in isolation and in text, compare features of words, learn beginning spelling patterns and basic spelling rules to help them be successful readers, writers and spellers. Students will use pictures and word cards to sort particular sounds and spelling patterns. Through shared reading and read aloud texts, students will be able to listen and recognize not only rhymes, but understand vocabulary and the meaning of words. More importantly, students will be given the opportunity to apply these spelling principles into their reading and writing daily.
