Darien Summer School & Enrichment

Preparing for Algebra

Students entering grades 8 - 9

This course is designed to expose students with the essential skills needed to find success in Algebra 1 but also to bridge any gaps for those who might not have met the prerequisites. Students entering 8th grade may use this course to qualify for Algebra 1 if they score a B- or higher on the placement exam (which is available to be taken through the Math Department in August). No summer school course can be used as a replacement for taking a full year math course during the school year. This course offers a preview into many of the topics that will be covered during the full-year Algebra 1 classes offered at both the middle & high schools in Darien, including: order of operations, combining terms, distribution, direct variation, graphing, solving, and evaluating linear equations, properties of exponents, solving word problems, solving systems of equations. Students enrolling in this course will be better prepared for their upcoming Algebra 1 course during the regular school year.
