Explorers! - Happy Hikers with Dirty Faces and Big Smiles!-In person
Grades-6-10
10:30am-12:30pm or 1pm-3pm
Join Lee-Stuart Evans as we learn the skills we need to explore the countryside with a series of fun activities within the grounds of Darien School. From reading and creating your own maps, building your own compass to understanding what to pack when out for a day on the trails this hands on 5 day course gives students a varied and fun experience with boosted confidence to go hiking themselves. We also cover a social/ historical element as the students find out more about 'The Old Leatherman of Connecticut' and the incredible 345 mile loop he used to walk in the 1880s which was re- enacted by the teacher last year. All activities are crafted to be aligned with National Science Standards and activities are strongly anchored in a discovery based approach to learning. This course is designed to be dovetailed with other outdoor activities offered by the same teacher for a multi week offering and ends with a fun activity creating a memento for the students to take home with them.
*All of Lee-Stuart Evans' outdoor courses offered dovetail/ compliment each other.
*This class is offered at 10:30am or 1pm. If students have another class ending at 12:30pm and need somewhere to go until 1pm, try Lunch Bunch!
